U.S. Congressman Ron Estes (R-Kansas) recently appeared on Washington Watch with Tony Perkins, hosted by Jody Hice. The discussion covered several topics, including the rescissions package, federal spending, and provisions in the One Big, Beautiful Bill aimed at benefiting Kansans and Americans.
Estes highlighted the importance of the rescissions package, noting that "one out of five dollars that the government spends is borrowed." He pointed out that this package marks a significant step as it is "the first time in decades that a president has requested that discretionary spending be pulled back."
Discussing specific items within the rescissions package, Estes mentioned funding for NPR and programs like drag queen events for children. He also referenced expenditures such as "$3 million for electric vehicles in Vietnam" and "$70,000 for a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion musical in Ireland," questioning their necessity for American taxpayers.
Estes expressed satisfaction with Speaker Johnson's support for more rescissions as they evaluate federal discretionary spending. He emphasized the need to address both discretionary and automatic spending programs.
On other areas ripe for rescissions, Estes noted that since 2019 tax revenue has increased by 46%, while spending has surged by 70%. He attributed some of this increase to Covid-related temporary measures becoming permanent across various grant programs.
Addressing Democrats' messaging to their voter base, Estes remarked that they lack a positive message and have become "a party of socialists." He criticized their opposition to certain provisions in the One Big, Beautiful Bill related to Medicaid and work requirements.
In an op-ed about the One Big, Beautiful Bill, Estes discussed its focus on extending tax provisions from 2017 and incorporating pro-family and pro-life measures. He highlighted efforts to prevent Medicaid funding from being used by Planned Parenthood for abortions and stressed increasing the Child Tax Credit indexed for inflation.
Additionally, Estes advocated for employer-funded childcare provisions and permanent family medical leave to assist families facing temporary illnesses or financial challenges during what he termed "disastrous years of Bidenflation."
