At a Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee hearing, Senator Richard Blumenthal questioned Cheryl Mason, nominee for the Department of Veterans Affairs Inspector General. Blumenthal raised concerns about Mason's ties to the Trump Administration and her role as a senior advisor to VA Secretary Doug Collins.

Blumenthal emphasized the need for non-partisan oversight: “The office of Inspector General is one that has to be completely non-partisan and independent.” He highlighted past actions by President Trump, stating, “It has to be seen in the context of the firing of most of our Inspector Generals by the President of the United States—illegally done.”

During questioning, Blumenthal asked if Mason would investigate alleged illegal mass firings by Secretary Collins. Mason did not commit to such an investigation, citing ongoing litigation. Blumenthal expressed frustration with her responses: “You have been unwilling to be forthright in your responses to these questions.”

Mason was also questioned about her involvement in plans to fire 83,000 VA employees and realignment activities within the department. She stated she had no direct role but conveyed directions from leadership.

Blumenthal concluded his remarks by objecting to Mason’s nomination due to her political background: “You are a political appointee as an Inspector General, and that is why I will object to your nomination.”

Inspectors General are intended by law to serve as independent watchdogs against waste and abuse. The hearing reflects ongoing scrutiny over appointments perceived as politically motivated.
