U.S. Congressman Ron Estes (R-Kansas) has introduced legislation aimed at removing a federal restriction on the Northeast Sedgwick County Park, a 650-acre area with trails and fields. The proposed bill seeks to eliminate federal oversight of the land, giving local authorities more control over its use.

If passed, the legislation would allow the Sedgwick County Commissioners to make decisions about recreational activities and future development in the park without needing approval from federal agencies.

“Local Kansas communities should be able to make decisions about how to use their land without federal strings attached,” said Rep. Estes. “My legislation will lift the encumbrance on the Northeast Sedgwick County Park and restore local control of the land to the Sedgwick County Commission instead of allowing the federal bureaucracy more than a thousand miles away to limit its use.”

Ron Estes has represented Kansas’s 4th District in Congress since 2017, after replacing Mike Pompeo. He was born in Topeka in 1956 and currently resides in Wichita. Estes holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Tennessee Technological University.
