House Ways and Means Social Security Subcommittee Chairman Ron Estes recently led a joint hearing with the Work and Welfare Subcommittee. The session featured Frank J. Bisignano, the Commissioner of Social Security, who made his first appearance before the committee following his recent confirmation.

Chairman Estes expressed gratitude to various members involved in the proceedings, including Darin LaHood, John Larson, Danny Davis, Jason Smith, and Mr. Neal. He emphasized the importance of working closely with Commissioner Bisignano to address issues within the Social Security Administration (SSA).

Estes highlighted that both he and Bisignano are not new to the challenges faced by SSA. He stated their commitment to improving customer service and addressing waste, fraud, and abuse within the program.

"Today marks a first for both me and the Commissioner," said Estes. "However, neither of us is new to or naïve about the successes and challenges that the Social Security Administration faces."

The chairman also underscored the bipartisan concern over maintaining Social Security's availability for beneficiaries. He noted that without Congressional action, Social Security’s retirement Trust Fund could be exhausted in just over seven years.

"My Republican colleagues and I, along with President Trump, are committed to protecting Social Security," he said.

Estes called for an honest dialogue regarding these vital programs while pointing out improvements made under Commissioner Bisignano's leadership. He mentioned reductions in average wait times on SSA's 800 number and field offices since 2023.

"There is still room for improvement," Estes remarked. "But we can and should do more to make the processes more efficient for beneficiaries."

The hearing aimed at discussing ways to modernize SSA services concluded with Estes expressing eagerness for continued discussions with colleagues and Commissioner Bisignano.
