The U.S. Senate has approved a resolution introduced by Senators Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) and Tom Carper (D-Del.) to designate September 2024 as National Student Parent Month. The resolution aims to acknowledge the efforts and achievements of nearly 4 million Americans who are balancing postsecondary education with parenting responsibilities.

"Balancing classes and parenting requires patience and perseverance," said Sen. Moran. "This is especially true for many of our military-connected students who wear many hats – mom, dad, student, servicemember or veteran – as they work to earn a degree or professional certification while on active duty, transitioning back to civilian life, or while a spouse is deployed."

Sen. Carper added, "Student parents work hard every day to better their lives and pave a path to success for their children. Receiving an education while raising a family requires time, energy, and dedication. I’m proud to lead this resolution with Senator Moran to recognize nearly 4 million Americans who deserve this recognition."

Currently, 47% of all student parents are military-connected students. Additionally, there are 813 surviving military spouses using educational benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs in the U.S.

Further information can be found in a letter of support from higher-education advocacy groups and the full text of the resolution.
