Beginning last Saturday, May 13, the Mid-America All-Indian Museum (MAAIM) will host a new Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibition entitled Voices and Votes: Democracy in America. The exhibit explores the history of American democracy and will be on display through June 24, 2023.

Voices and Votes is based on a major exhibition currently on display at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. The travelling Museum on Main Street adaptation will have many of the same dynamic features: historical and contemporary photos; educational and archival video; engaging multimedia interactives with short games and additional footage, photos, and information; and historical objects like campaign souvenirs, voter memorabilia, and protest material.

Two other exhibitions also opening Saturday at MAAIM include:

The American Indian Vote, a local exhibit, which explores the history of the American Indian vote and the Native peoples who make up our local, state and federal government. Native peoples were awarded citizenship in 1924, but the struggle for voting rights stretched on much longer and remains an issue today.

Celebrating the Centennial of the 19th Amendment: Women Vote, a traveling exhibit presented by the League of Women Voters of Kansas, brings to life the history of the women’s suffrage movement in Kansas. The exhibit shares the stories of the historic women who led the women’s right to vote movement in early 20th century Kansas as they fought to ensure their inclusion in civic life and traces the influence of African American and Native American women who played an integral part in the process, even though the right to vote did not include them until much later.

Admission to MAAIM is $7 for adults, $5 for seniors, students and military, $3 for children ages 6-12 and children under 6 get in free.
