Rep. Ron Estes from Kansas has issued a statement regarding the Treasury's recent memo to the White House, which addresses President Donald Trump's executive action on the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Rep. Estes expressed approval of Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's compliance with the president's directive to dismantle OECD agreements, which he believes are detrimental to American interests.
"I'm pleased to hear that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has followed through on the president's directive to dismantle the disastrous OECD agreements that put America last and allow foreign countries to target U.S. job creators for their own treasuries' gains," said Rep. Estes. He emphasized that "the Trump administration made clear from day one that it will defend American interests in any global tax negotiations." The delivery of this report is seen as a step toward ensuring U.S. tax authority and revenues remain intact.
Rep. Estes noted Ways and Means Chairman Smith has already proposed legislation supporting this initiative, with plans for further legislative efforts underway: "Ways and Means Chairman Smith has already introduced legislation to assist in this process, and I look forward to introducing a bill soon as well."
Over time, Rep. Estes has been vocal about his opposition to OECD's global tax strategies, particularly following President Trump's actions against such deals earlier in January. On the same day as Trump's executive action, Rep. Estes joined forces with Jason Smith of Missouri in proposing the Defending American Jobs and Investment Act.
His previous endeavors include writing an op-ed for London's Telegraph detailing U.S. opposition, collaborating with MP Priti Patel on issues surrounding OECD Pillar Two tax schemes, leading a letter demanding accountability from Treasury officials, traveling internationally for discussions with European leaders on these matters, and drafting legislation aimed at imposing reciprocal taxes against countries enforcing what he perceives as unfair taxes on U.S businesses under OECD guidelines.
