U.S. Senator Calls Out VA's Failure to Implement Crisis Intervention Training for Police Officers

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) demanded answers and an action plan from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) after discovering a lack of compliance with the law requiring crisis intervention and suicide prevention training for VA Police Officers.

"In 2020, Congress passed the COMPACT Act, which required VA to provide police officers with annual training on how to prevent suicide through crisis intervention and de-escalation skills," said Sen. Moran in a letter to VA Secretary McDonough.

The Senator expressed concerns following reports that only 28% of armed VA Police Officers received the required annual training from January 1, 2023, to March 8, 2024, as mandated by the COMPACT Act. He emphasized the importance of equipping officers with the necessary skills to ensure the safety and success of their missions.

Moran highlighted the critical need for compliance with the law, especially in light of recent security incidents at VA medical facilities nationwide. He urged VA leadership to prioritize training to provide the level of care that veterans deserve.
