At a Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee hearing, Senator Richard Blumenthal questioned Paul Lawrence, nominee for Deputy Secretary of Veterans Affairs, on the effects of the Trump Administration's policies on veterans. The discussion centered around the recent termination of 1,000 VA employees and concerns over transparency from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
Blumenthal highlighted a lack of communication from VA leadership: "During the nomination process for Secretary Collins…we were promised transparency and consultation…Now, the Chairman and I learn of far-reaching decisions after the fact, and almost always directly from the press, from VA employees, or from veterans."
The senator submitted a list of 22 requests for information and seven letters sent to President Trump and Secretary Collins regarding veterans' care. Despite pledges to collaborate with Congress, he has yet to receive responses.
In questioning Lawrence, Blumenthal asked if he would be responsive to Congress if confirmed. Lawrence did not commit with a simple "yes" or "no," stating he would look into requests if confirmed.
Blumenthal pressed Lawrence on his stance regarding firings at the VA: “Do you support the firing of 1000 VA employees?” Lawrence refrained from condemning these actions.
Blumenthal emphasized real-life impacts: “Transportation for disabled veterans has been reduced. Is that fair?...Service lines at VA hospitals and clinics have been halted. Is that fair?”
Lawrence responded by saying he would investigate these issues but did not outright condemn them.
Blumenthal concluded by urging prompt responses to congressional inquiries: “Well, I hope you look into these questions quickly, and equally important, that you respond to us.”
