Rep. Ron Estes, a Republican from Kansas, cast his vote in favor of a legislative measure aimed at keeping the government operational, extending support for farmers, and providing disaster relief nationwide. Despite his support, the measure did not pass in the House, with a vote tally of 174-235. This legislation was introduced as an alternative to a previous continuing resolution (CR) that Rep. Estes had opposed earlier in the week.
Rep. Estes expressed his concerns about fiscal management in Washington, stating, "Washington has a spending problem, and voters spoke loudly in November that we need to change course in D.C." He criticized the earlier CR proposal as being overly lengthy and filled with unnecessary provisions. "Earlier this week I opposed the monstrous 1,500-plus page wish list masquerading as a CR," he noted, acknowledging public opposition to it.
The new bill garnered Rep. Estes's support because it was a "clean, temporary spending bill" endorsed by the incoming president and aimed at providing disaster relief to Americans and extending support for Kansas farmers. However, he emphasized the need for change in legislative practices: "This bad habit of governing by CR must end," he said. Rep. Estes anticipates a shift towards regular legislative procedures when Republicans assume control of both houses of Congress and the presidency in 2025.
