Prior to the final legislative session week of 2023, Tax Notes brought attention to Representative Ron Estes' efforts to address expired tax provisions. This initiative aims to stimulate economic growth. In their December 8 article titled "Republican Taxwriters Push for Expired TCJA Tax Provision Work," Tax Notes reported on the ongoing push by House Ways and Means Republicans.
"The window may be closing on tax package opportunities for the year, but House Ways and Means Republicans are still trying to push their leadership to act on a legislative fix for expired business tax provisions," stated Tax Notes. The publication highlighted that despite only one legislative week remaining, the impact of unaddressed expired provisions continues, as noted by committee member Ron Estes from Kansas.
Rep. Estes emphasized the urgency in his statement to Tax Notes: "Small businesses and innovators who support countless American jobs are desperate for us to take action on three key tax provisions that, because they’ve expired, have hindered growth and reduced job opportunities for Americans." He urged the House to act before another year passes without addressing these issues affecting innovation and entrepreneurship.
In their letter, Ways and Means Republicans congratulated Speaker Mike Johnson on his election while underscoring the importance of three tax changes deemed crucial for economic vitality, job creation, and U.S. global competitiveness.
The letter led by Rep. Estes was signed by 20 additional members of the House Ways and Means Committee. These signatories included Representatives Adrian Smith, Jodey Arrington, Vern Buchanan, Mike Kelly, David Schweikert, Darin LaHood, Brad Wenstrup, Drew Ferguson, Lloyd Smucker, Kevin Hern, Carol Miller, Greg Murphy, David Kustoff, Brian Fitzpatrick, Claudia Tenney, Blake Moore, Michelle Steel, Randy Feenstra, Mike Carey and Greg Steube.
