Today, Rep. Ron Estes (R-Kansas) voted in favor of major reforms to strengthen privacy in the Reforming Intelligence and Securing America Act.

Rep. Estes emphasized the importance of national security, stating, "Global threats to our nation are more prevalent now than ever before, and the Biden administration’s open border exposes the United States to even greater risks. It's imperative that the United States has the necessary tools to combat terrorists and keep Americans safe."

Acknowledging the imminent expiration of existing FISA authorities, Rep. Estes highlighted the risks associated with a potential lapse in intelligence agencies' ability to protect citizens. He expressed concerns about a scenario where FISA authorities are reauthorized without any changes, citing the lack of trust in the FBI among Americans.

Despite recognizing the bill's imperfections, Rep. Estes underscored the significance of the Reforming Intelligence and Securing America Act in implementing crucial reforms and preventing the expiration of authorities. He noted that the bill includes measures such as increased penalties for FBI agents who abuse the law, enhanced oversight and accountability, and provisions for vetting individuals entering the country illegally.

In addressing the FBI's discontent with the new requirements, Rep. Estes emphasized the necessity of these reforms in safeguarding against government abuse and protecting communities.
