Jets sweep the Rangers behind key hitting in game 1, De Luca Paape hits a home run in game 2 to take down NWOSU

Newman traveled south to Oklahoma to take on the Northwestern Oklahoma State Rangers in a double header.

Game 1:

The Jets started off well offensively. Anissa Ramos had an RBI in her first at bat to score Torri Waggoner and move Madi Canez to third base. Gianna Navarro then doubled to right field, hitting in Ramos and Canez. The Jets led 3-0 after the top of the first.

The second inning continued the great offense for Newman. Waggoner hit an RBI to put Kaitlyn Praught across the plate, bringing the Jets to an early 4-0 lead. Canez and Samantha Gutierrez also had RBIs in the inning to extend the lead 6-0.

"We came out swinging the bats really well while scoring 6 runs in the first 2 innings," said Coach Andrea Gustafson.

The bottom of the second the Rangers finally got their offense going. They would score the next 5 runs. At the end of the 5th inning Newman still held onto the lead 6-5.

In the top of the 6th, Waggoner had a crucial hit that put Praught across the plate, extending their lead to 7-5. The Rangers battled back and tied the game at 7 all at the end of the 7th to force extra innings.

The Jets took advantage of these extra innings and scored 3 runs in the top of the 8th to take the lead 10-7. The Rangers tried to rally, but fell short only scoring 2 in the bottom of the inning. Newman took the win 10-9.

"Even when NWOSU made a comeback I thought we stayed composed and obviously found a way to hang on to the win. Jackie Gold pitched well in the win," said Gustafson.

The Jets left 7 on with 12 hits and 10 runs.

Waggoner had 4 RBIs and went 3-5 from the plate, scoring 3 runs.

Gianna Navaro had 2 RBIs and went 2-4 from the plate.

Game 2:

The Jets and Rangers were held scoreless throughout 4 innings.

Newman was the first to bat in some runs. The Jets scored in the top of the 5th with a double to center field from Gianna De Luca-Paape to score Gianna Navarro. The Rangers escaped the inning allowing that one run, but the Jets came out swinging in the 6th inning to add a couple more runs.

In the top of the 6th inning, De Luca-Paape came up big again, hitting one over the fence to bring in Navarro. The Jets were on top 3-0. The Rangers couldn't rally back.

"Madi Dewitt pitched great the second game only allowing 2 hits. Our defense played well and we got a couple big hits and RBI's out of Gianna Paape," said Gustafson.

Newman completed the sweep with a 3-0 win.

The Jets left 5 on with 5 hits and 3 runs.

De Luca-Paape led the Jets in hitting with 1 homerun, 1 double, 3 RBIs in 3 appearances at the plate.
