Jets drop midweek matchup in Alva
Newman and Northwestern Oklahoma State began a home and away game on Tuesday afternoon with the Jets making the trip to Alva before the Rangers visit McCarthy Field on March 8th. The Jets would only string together 3 hits and 1 run in a low offensive game for both teams with NWOSU taking the game 4-1.
The Rangers plated 3 of their 4 runs in the first inning and got their first 2 before the Jets could record an out. The lead off hitter walked and advanced to 2nd base on a single before back to back singles and a sacrifice fly gave the Rangers an early 3-0 lead after the first inning.
Newman got a run back in the 3rd inning. Jack Kiser walked to lead off the inning and Hayden Vandepol bunted him to 2nd base before Eli Wohl walked. Jake Angelico doubled to right center and swam around the tag at 2nd base to give the Jets 2nd and 3rd with only 1 out. NU tried scoring another run on a sacrifice fly attempt but the Rangers right fielder helped NWOSU escape the inning only giving up 1 run after throwing out Eli Wohl at the plate.
The Rangers would get their final run in the 5th inning and the Jets pitching staff would only give up one hit the rest of the way but the offense couldn't get it going in the later innings and NWOSU would end the game on the winning side, 4-1.
Jack Kiser, Jake Angelico, and Jenner Steele had the 3 hits for Newman. Colby Wilson and Garrett Calderon combined for 6 strikeouts.
